How can I put some sparkle back in my life?

QUESTION?

How can I put some sparkle back into my life?

ANSWER

Live by your values

Values are much under-rated.  Goals, ah yes, we are are all familiar with goals.  Targets, ah yes, we are all familiar with targets.  SMART targets, I guess many of us are more than familiar with SMART targets.  In fact, for many of us our lives may be little more than target after target, goal after goal.  We are driven, perhaps too driven by targets and goals.  Harsh taskmasters, because they are never satisfied, they never let us rest.  There is always another goal, another target.  But values, well they are different.

Values are something deeper, something longer lasting, something at our core that gives us direction, if we will let them.  If we are living in tune with our values then our lives are meaningful, they are congruent, they will sparkle.  Where goals are finite, values are infinite, where targets are here today and gone tomorrow values are eternal.  Values are what make us the best that we can be.  Values are valuable.  They are the bedrock on which our lives are based.  They are what we can keep returning to when we run out of steam, when we are not sure which direction to take.  Values keep us on track.

If we want a sparkling life then let us look to our values.

I wrote “THE SPARKLING LIFE” to remind me of that.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

  • How do you keep in touch with your values?
  • How do you make sure that values are directing your life?
  • What can you say that might be of help to others?

Please leave your comments, I would love to hear from you.

POEM FOR TODAY

THE SPARKLING LIFE

It often isn’t easy, in fact often it is true

When we’re faced with a transition we’re not sure what we should do

And our choices are all muddied, guaranteed to us confuse,

Then it’s time to ask our values which direction they would choose.

‘Twould be good if they were handy, old familiars which we

Are in dialogue continual, checking in with constantly,

But it maybe they’re neglected, shunted careless out the way

‘Til we hear a little whisper say, “I’ve something left to say.”

Why not pull up close and cosy, take some quiet time and rest

And remember times gone by when you were living at your best,

When your life was full of sparkle and your hurdles easy cleared,

They were times we walked together and I haven’t disappeared.

I am here in your next heartbeat, I’m as close as your next breath,

I’m your most constant companion from your birth until your death

And I wait only for attention, then I’m instant by your side,

So if you are at a crossroads, I am here, I’ll be your guide.

So next time we’re in transition and unsure which way to head

And our thinking’s worn us out, let’s ask our values then instead

To remind us where we’ve come from, and then lead us bit by bit

Towards a life that we can value where our sparkle is relit.

And just before you go ……..

As regular readers must have gathered by now, I am very enthusiastic about ACT, Acceptance Commitment Therapy.  Apparently ACT works well for those people who have tried many different self help or therapeutical  strategies with perhaps, not much luck.  If you, like me, are one of those, then why not give ACT a go.  It won’t do you any harm and it may well do you alot of good.

I’m currently reading “The Worry Trap, How to Free yourself from Worry & Anxiety Using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy” by Chad Lejeune and I am finding it really interesting.   If you suffer from worry and anxiety then I recommend it to you.
